This encourages<br \/>\no Leaf instead of root growth in root crops<br \/>\no Leaf and stem growth at the expense of fruit eg Tomatoes, Peas and Beans<\/li>\n<li>Mains water is processed and chlorinated for drinking. Using it for watering gardens is a waste.<\/li>\n<li>Collected water is purified and pumped by sun and clouds and is free<\/li>\n<li>As part of the overall aims of the garden, we want to demonstrate ideas on garden watering to others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Saving Water<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Save rainfall on all garden roofs (inc. Dip tank covers)<\/li>\n<li>Store a maximum percentage of total garden requirements<\/li>\n<li>Apply only as much as is required by each plant and apply where it is best utilised<\/li>\n<li>Minimise evaporation by keeping the soil well mulched and in good heart, with a high humus content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Save work<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design automatic watering in Greenhouses using capillary mats, hydroponics, seep hoses, drip nozzles and by channelling<\/li>\n<li>Dip tanks numerous and conveniently placed all round garden<\/li>\n<li>Dip tanks filled simultaneously (all on a common level and linked)<\/li>\n<li>Provision made for emergencies (mains hose from adjoining allotment site)<\/li>\n<li>Watering regime noted on Bed Boards<\/li>\n<li>Overflow pipe to top up wildlife ponds\n<div id=\"attachment_14\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14\" title=\"irrigation\" src=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/irrigation.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up shot of greenhouse watering system \" width=\"500\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/irrigation.jpg 500w, http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/irrigation-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Close-up shot of greenhouse watering system<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Progress to date<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>Water collected from shed<\/li>\n<li>Water collected from small greenhouse &#8211; used for dip tanks (Greenhouse removed 2009, tank remains !)<\/li>\n<li>Water collected from <a href=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/?page_id=95\">large greenhouse<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Feeds 3 high level toilet cisterns for semi-automatic irrigation<\/li>\n<li>Feeds 2 baths which double as heat stores and seating area\/planters<\/li>\n<li>Feeds 2 dip tanks, one alongside greenhouse, other halfway along garden<\/li>\n<li>Dip tanks around site &#8211; filled by temporary syphoning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Large greenhouse\n<ul>\n<li>Gutter based Irrigation system- Urinal cistern to automate flow<\/li>\n<li>Benches and pipework for 2 baths<\/li>\n<li>Organise overflow out of greenhouse<\/li>\n<li>Hydroponic bed on top of bath &#8211; sitting on ex-fridge shelving<\/li>\n<li>Pebble seedbed ontop of the other bath<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Overflow to top up main pond<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Water Minimisation Project Why do it ?
