There&#8217;s lots of great resources on the Internet around bees, I&#8217;ll not attempt to summarise them.<\/p>\n<p>Some plants we have especially for bees;<a href=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1133.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-485\" title=\"borage\" src=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1133.jpg 800w, http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1133-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Borage<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>vigarous hardy herbacious annual plant with lovely blue flowers<\/li>\n<li>Once established, easily self-sows<\/li>\n<li>flowers taste of cucumber &#8211; great to garnish salads, or in Pimms<\/li>\n<li>leaves are used as a pasta filling in parts of Italy<\/li>\n<li>companion plant to protect or nurse legumes, spinach, brassicas, tomatoes and strawberries<\/li>\n<li>flowers refill quickly with nectar, which is why the bees love visiting them so much<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Cow Parsley<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1188.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-460 alignright\" title=\"bee\" src=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1188-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Bee on Cow Parsley\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1188-300x214.jpg 300w, http:\/\/tatnampatch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/DSC1188.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Biennial plant (flowers in the second year)<\/li>\n<li>also known as Wild Chervil, but in the same family as Hemlock and Hogweed, so maybe best left for the bees<\/li>\n<li>Also related to the Carrot and Parsley<\/li>\n<li>Our plants tend to get covered in bees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Beehives<\/h2>\n<p>We have left short bundles of bamboo sticks and other hollow stemmed canes (Cow parsley is one you can use), which anyone can quickly sort and hang in their garden for overwintering and for bumble bees to lay their eggs in.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget Strawbridge did a great short film of mason bees laying in a &#8220;Bee Hotel&#8221; in her garden <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Ohgyz5Bid5U\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/Ohgyz5Bid5U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We have\u00c2\u00a0 also attracted 3 beekeepers onto the site over the years. The best location on site seems to be at the far end, away from the active areas, and with a tree to the south, which we were told encourages the bees to fly upwards, as they always leave the hive to the South to orientate themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The first beekeeper had a conventional hive, and we were all stunned (including him) when he had 100 pounds of honey in the first year. He became concerned that someone might get stung during our school visits, and decided to leave site. The second also used a conventional hive, and stayed a few years. Our current beekeeper has opted for a top-bar hive, said to be a more natural way for bees to build their honeycomb downwards.<\/p>\n<p>Bees will range over up to a 3 mile radius from\u00c2\u00a0 their hive, so our resource is a pollenator for gardens across much of the centre of Poole and Oakdale.<\/p>\n<p>Different styles of hive are summarised at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beehive\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beehive<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Hoverflies<\/h2>\n<p>Our greenhouse has sets of louvred slats at ground level.
